Quantum Social Theory for Critical International Relations Theorists: Quantizing Critique (Palgrave Studies in International Relations, 2021).

This book examines the crossroads of quantum and critical approaches to International Relations and argues that these approaches share a common project of uncovering complexity and uncertainty. The “quantum turn” in International Relations theory has produced a number of interesting insights into the complex ways in which our assumptions about the physics of the world around us can limit our understanding of social life. While critique is possible within a Newtonian social science, core assumptions of separability and determinism of classical physics impose limits on what is imaginable. The author argues that by adopting a quantum imaginary, social theory can move beyond its Newtonian limits, and explore two methods for quantizing conceptual models—translation and application. This book is the first introductory book to quantum social theory ideas specifically intended for an audience of critical International Relations.

Ce livre examine le carrefour des théories sociales quantiques et des approches critiques aux relations internationales, et soutient que ces approches partagent un projet commun de découverte de la complexité et de l'incertitude. Le «tournant quantique» de la théorie des relations internationales a produit un certain nombre d'idées intéressantes sur les façons complexes dont nos hypothèses sur la physique peuvent limiter notre compréhension de la vie sociale. Si la critique est possible dans le cadre d'une science sociale newtonienne, les hypothèses fondamentales de séparabilité et de déterminisme de la physique classique imposent des limites à ce qui est imaginable. Je soutiens qu'en adoptant un imaginaire quantique, la théorie sociale peut dépasser ses limites newtoniennes, et explorer deux méthodes de quantification des modèles conceptuels : la traduction et l'application. Ce livre est le premier ouvrage d'introduction aux idées de la théorie sociale quantique spécifiquement écrit pour les chercheurs critiques en relations internationales.
